On November 10, in literary living room of Sumy State University an event “Ukraine-NATO: a modern level of cooperation” took place. A Head of Public Legue “Ukraine-NATO” Sergiy Jerdj spoke about the Northatlantic Alliance activity, its impact on Ukraine and the possibility of integration.

Sergiy Jerdj told the present civic activists and students about NATO and made a tour of its development history. In particular, the expert noted that NATO - is an institution that serves to establish cooperation of potentials between major countries. The organization was founded by small European countries that could not fully secure safety, even in neutral. Among these countries were Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and others. The main purpose of creation was to become united in order to avoid war in the territory of NATO, since the Alliance is trying to solve all conflicts only in a diplomatic and peaceful way.

In addition, Sergiy Jerdj also noted, that today NATO watches not only over warfare areas such as land, sea, air and space, but the cyberspace as well. In particular, in Ukraine it is planned to create a Center for the Study of hybrid war - the first of this type of organization that operates outside of NATO countries.

Regarding the Ukraine joining NATO, expert expressed the opinion that our country can become a member of the organization today. A political decision would be enough. When it comes to security, previously Ukraine had been like an "orphan", as it had the out of bloc status, but today the situation is different.

And the war in the east, according to Sergiy Jerdj, should not influence the decision, despite the fact that it is written in NATO charter: countries with border disputes, cannot become members of the organization. The expert believes, that the denial to accept Ukraine for membership in NATO on the part of that reason is unethical, because neither our people, nor the authorities are not to blame for what is happening in the east. In addition, by contrast, Ukraine needs a helping hand.

At this year's Summit, held in Warsaw, NATO decided to assist Ukraine in forty directions, including: computerized management, logistics, command, cyber defense, medical rehabilitation, energy security, telemedicine, reform the security services and others. So one of the main goals of Ukraine today is the move to NATO standards, and we have a chance not only for cooperation, but also for membership in an organization, that acts as a guarantor of security.

The event was held with the support of Sumy State University and the Research Center for Regional Security of SSU.
